Even though New York Giants S Landon Collins helped the Alabama Crimson Tide win the 2013 national championship, he wasn’t exactly a household name when he entered the NFL as a second-round pick in 2015.

In fact, WR Brandon Marshall — a new teammate of Collins — admitted he had no idea who Collins was heading into last season.

However, after Collins finished the 2016 campaign with 100 tackles, five interceptions and four sacks, he has quickly made a name for himself.

Collins told the New York Post after Saturday’s practice that he may have started slow in his NFL career, but he is going to take another step toward becoming the league’s best safety this fall:

“Oh, I’m going to be way better,’’ Collins said. “My rookie year, I think guys wanted me to come in be [Chiefs star cornerback] Marcus Peters or the next Ed Reed [the former Ravens star safety]. It takes time to be those guys. Those guys didn’t do it their first year and build their names.

“For me to blow up the following year is a blessing, but it took time for me to learn the defense, know where I’m supposed to be, know every key and assignment of every guy on the defense.’’

The Giants’ defense took a big step forward last season, thanks in large part to Collins. This year, they’ll look to be even better as they challenge the Dallas Cowboys for NFC East supremacy.
