Greg Sankey downplayed No. 8 Alabama’s Week 2 loss to No. 7 Texas during an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday.

Sankey argued that the criteria isn’t to put all the undefeated teams in, suggesting that could lead to the inclusion of FCS teams. The SEC commissioner said that the committee has to look more at the big picture to make these decisions.

“The criteria is not to put the undefeated teams in the four-team Playoff. If we did that, we would have FCS teams in the CFP this year,” said Sankey. “You have to look deeply. And I think the committee has to look consider big-picture issues, like the Texas-Alabama game.”

Sankey argued that if Alabama didn’t have the nonconference loss, UA would be seen differently. The commissioner said it should be about rewarding wins.

“That was a huge night. … Should that game be scheduled? Take that game off Alabama’s schedule, what does this look like right now? You have to reward people for winning those games, absolutely, you just can’t ultimately penalize them,” said Sankey. “It’s not a one-week analysis, it’s a full-season analysis. And that starts to inform best and deserving.”

Alabama must first take care of business in the SEC Championship before thinking about the Playoff. Kickoff between Alabama and No. 1 Georgia will be at 4 p.m. ET on CBS.
