Following reports that Dan Holgorsen is expected to leave West Virginia for the head coaching position in Houston, another Power 5 job could soon be open in college football. Naturally, the next question becomes who makes sense to replace Holgorsen in Morgantown?

ESPN’s College GameDay crew is broadcasting live from the Rose Bowl leading up to the upcoming Ohio State-Washington game and the topic of West Virginia’s job came up. While the crew first went to former West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez, who was just hired at Ole Miss as offensive coordinator, another name came up during the conversation.

“If they can’t get (Rodriguez), I think Butch Jones, the former head coach at Tennessee, was there as an assistant under Rich Rod, also might be a good fit there,” Kirk Herbstreit said during the New Year’s Day GameDay program.

The crew noted that Rodriguez has an out in his new Ole Miss contract that he can freely leave Oxford if he is offered a head coaching role, so if West Virginia does come calling, the move would make sense.

As for Jones, he’s spent the season working in Tuscaloosa as an intern for Nick Saban. Jones was fired at Tennessee during his fifth season on the job, after recording a 34-27 record overall and a 14-24 SEC record. Jones worked under Rodriguez at West Virginia as receivers coach from 2006-2007.
