Nick Saban arrived in Atlanta knowing the SEC media was going to ask him about the quarterback competition between Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa. To the surprise of no one, Saban wasn’t ready to publicly name a starting quarterback for the 2018 season. But in an interview on SiriusXM’s ESPNU Radio, the Alabama coach did offer some insight as to what he has told each player about winning the starting job.

Saban hasn’t veered from his philosophy that the key to the quarterback position is “winning the team” by getting the most out of the offense. It’s an offensive philosophy former Saban assistants such as Jim McElwain, Will Muschamp and others have adopted as head coaches. Saban made it clear that he’s looking for the quarterback who gels best with the first-team offense and elevates the play of those around him. He also issued a key warning to both quarterbacks.

“I’ve told both guys, every time you do something to bring attention to yourself, you’re probably taking a step backward,” Saban said in the interview.
