The big news in the NFL on Monday came out of Foxborough, Mass. as New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was deemed unavailable to participate in training camp activities until Thursday after a “misunderstanding” regarding the league’s COVID-19 protocols.

That came a day after Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels deemed Newton as the team’s starting quarterback for now following a 35-0 blowout win over the Philadelphia Eagles, with the veteran going 8-of-9 for 103 yards and a touchdown before giving way to Jones after 3 series. However, McDaniels noted that the job was still up for grabs and was head coach Bill Belichick’s decision to ultimately make.

Jones, during an appearance on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni & Fauria” on Monday afternoon, was asked if he was ready to start in the league if called upon.

“That’s more of a future thing,” Jones responded. “Today, I’m just trying to learn the plays I messed up on at practice. That’s really my focus – fix those and move on to the next day.”

Needless to say, Newton being held out of camp doesn’t help the case of the former NFL MVP, and questions as to whether it will be him or Jones getting the call in Week will continue until Belichick makes the call.
