Mike Locksley was the coordinator for a loaded 2018 Alabama offense. While the season ultimately ended in a disappointing loss to Clemson, Crimson Tide fans fondly remember the team’s quarterback room.

Tua Tagovailoa was the starter on the 2018 squad after his memorable second-half performance off the bench helping Alabama win the 2017 national championship. Jalen Hurts surprised many by staying in a backup role for the season instead of entering the transfer portal or redshirting. Mac Jones was the team’s third-string QB.

In 2021, all 3 were NFL starting quarterbacks. Greg McElroy, a fellow former Alabama QB, recently asked Locksley to name the best of the bunch.

“Man! Sheesh,” Locksley reacted in his appearance on McElroy’s “Always College Football” show.

Locksley, now the head coach at Maryland, creatively avoided answering.

“I tell you what, I really liked Tua-J-Mac,” Locksley said. “Tua-J-Mac — I thought he was the best of all those 3 guys. You didn’t mention his name, but he was sitting in that room. Tua-J-Mac.”

McElroy suggested that any QB could be productive in the 2018 offense under Locksley.

“I remember that year because we actually played quite a bit,” Locksley said, “because Mac got a few highlights on the 2018 highlight cut up as well.”

Locksley’s full appearance can be viewed on YouTube. The “Tua-J-Mac” segment begins at the 29:10 mark.
