This week in the SEC, four teams — Alabama, Auburn, Florida and South Carolina — are playing lesser opponents to prepare for next weekend’s rivalry games.

It’s what has been dubbed “Cupcake Week” and it garners varying reactions from fans and media members.

However, ESPN host Paul Finebaum has made his stance on cupcakes very clear, and blasted Alabama for hosting Mercer this week. During his appearance on SportsCenter on Saturday morning, Finebaum called the game a disgrace (via 247Sports):

“I think it’s an absolute disgrace,” Finebaum said. “The only thing I would say is that if you have a Thanksgiving game or a Friday game, maybe I can cut you a little slack there. But for Alabama to be playing Mercer is absurd. You’re building toward a crescendo at the end of the season, why do you need these games? You get these games out of the way early in the year, just sweep the garbage out.

“I absolutely hate these games.”

There’s been some momentum for a schedule that includes two bye weeks and eliminates games like Alabama-Mercer, but not everyone is on board for that, either.

These games are part of the schedule for now, though, but that could change in the coming years if reactions like Finebaum’s become more commonplace.
