After signing a number of highly regarded pocket passers in recent history, Alabama has begun to shift offensive philosophies and are looking to sign more dual-threat quarterback prospects. True freshman dual-threat quarterback Jalen Hurts showcased just how dangerous a running threat behind center can be in the Tide’s offense and top 2017 prospect Tua Tagovailoa is planning on joining in on the offensive transition in Tuscaloosa.

Rated as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback prospect in the nation by 247Sports, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Tagovailoa is currently participating in the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles. Tagovailoa spoke to Bleacher Report about why he chose Alabama and their predominantly pro-style offense over many of the nation’s elite programs, many of which run spread offenses designed to help running quarterbacks excel at the college level.

“(Offensive coordinator Lane) Kiffin has talked to me about that, but they aren’t big on running the quarterback in their offense,” Tagovailoa said to Sanjay Kirpalani of Bleacher Report. “I totally understand that. My whole thing was, if you want to play in the NFL, why not go to a NFL-based offense and learn from best and make it easier on that transition to the NFL.”

Tagovailoa makes a good point. As successful as Marcus Mariota was at Oregon, many questioned his ability to run an NFL offense after taking nearly no snaps under center and playing in an offense without NFL reads or play designs. Had Mariota played in a different offense, he very well could have went first overall ahead of Jamies Winston in the 2015 NFL Draft.

One interesting note on Tagovailoa’s exchange with Kiffin, while Hurts turned heads during Alabama’s spring game this year, if the freshman does get on the field this season, don’t expect the Tide’s offense to drastically change with a more dual-threat option lining up under center.

If at all imaginable, Alabama may have just figured out a way to be even more dangerous on the field by concentrating on only adding quarterbacks who are extremely gifted runners.
