This spring is different for Tua Tagovailoa. His brother, Taulia, is an early enrollee and currently competing with him during practice.

The elder Tagovailoa also has a different OC in Steve Sarkisian, who comes back to Alabama after having been the Falcons’ OC for the last two seasons. Sark is known as more of a pro-style-minded OC, which will actually help Tagovailoa’s progression at the position.

On Monday, Tagovailoa spoke to the media about what the offense has been trying to “perfect” under Sarkisian.

“You know with Coach Sark, it’s really full-field progression reads. Last year (under Mike Locksley) we worked more on RPO (run-pass option), and we had that opportunity to perfect it. Now, we’re trying to perfect full progression reads; so, reading the entire field.

“I think implementing full progression reads and RPOs is definitely going to be really big this season.”

It’s rare than an offense brings back so many veteran weapons, but unfortunately for opponents, the Tide certainly do. Pass catchers Jerry Jeudy, Jaylen Waddle, Henry Ruggs and DeVonta Smith all return, along with Tagovailoa, to create what could be the best passing game in the country.

All five are well-versed with RPOs, thanks to Locksley, and now under Sarkisian, Tagovailoa will add another dimension. This progression will certainly be big for the gunslinger as he looks ahead to an NFL future.
