Alabama and Ohio State are two of the college football programs seemingly always in the mix for every highly sought-after recruit. No matter where they play, from coast to coast, many top recruits are interested in playing for the Crimson Tide and Buckeyes. A recently released text from Urban Meyer shows that the former OSU coach considered a leak to the press in order to get a recruiting boost over Nick Saban and his staff.

On Friday afternoon, Ohio State released 2,000 pages worth of emails and texts to/from Meyer. Reporters everywhere are scanning the messages for anything interesting. Columbus Dispatch reporter Kevin Stankiewicz was one of the first to share a text in which Meyer proposes leaking that Alabama tried to hire Greg Schiano, Alex Grinch and Zach Smith, but all three said no to the Tide. Meyer writes, in a message sent on Jan. 19, 2018, “Should be Leak (sic) out that Alabama tries to hire Schiano, Grinch and Zach and all three turned them down? Recruiting?”

It’s not known if Alabama really tried to hire all three assistants or if any actually turned down an offer to join Nick Saban’s staff. Meyer appears to be suggesting leaking the information to get a leg up in recruiting. If you follow sports news (or political news), you know that not all “leaks” are factually accurate.
