While fans and analysts wait for Alabama to name a starting quarterback for the 2018 season, speculation is running rampant about whether it should be Jalen Hurts or Tua Tagovailoa.

Many think Tagovailoa will win the job, and former Georgia QB (and current CBS analyst) Aaron Murray is among them.

Murray, who is the SEC’s all-time leader in touchdown passes, said he thinks Tagovailoa gives the Tide the best chance to win:

“Listen, I don’t think this is a competition,” he said. “You look at these guys and I think it’s been won on the practice field, and not even in the games. You heard the whispers last year, and in practice throughout the season — guys were just frustrated with Jalen. I mean, he couldn’t throw a football.

“If you’re in practice and you’re a running quarterback, you can’t really show too much, and Tua’s out there throwing beautiful passes in 11-on-11 and getting the team excited about what the future can hold for that offense. In my mind, he’s the guy moving forward. I think he brings such a unique dynamic to this Alabama offense that we haven’t seen in a while.”

Coach Nick Saban doesn’t have to rush into anything, and it’s unlikely that he’ll name a starter before Week 1. So, until then, we’ll have to continue speculating and trying to parse out who is winning the competition.
