For Arkansas’ sake, the rollercoaster under center has got to stop as soon as possible. Chad Morris and his staff recognized that fact heading into the North Texas game but obviously made the wrong decision at quarterback following Cole Kelley’s four-interception game in the 44-17 loss to the Mean Green.

With that in mind, Arkansas plans to start Ty Storey once again as the team enters conference play this weekend at Auburn.

Much like last week, the Razorbacks plan to stick with one quarterback in the upcoming game with the change this week being that the coaches have already named Storey the team’s starter. Last week, Kelley was not publicly named the starter until just before kickoff against North Texas.

Chad Morris explained why the team is taking a new approach this week in preparation to face the Tigers.

“I wanted to go thru the last week of preparation of practice, as I shared with you, Cole (Kelley) had the best week, and I was content with seeing if we can settle in and ride this thing out with Cole,” Morris said on Monday. “This has kinda been the situation we have been in — we are going with Ty this week. Regardless of the practice, regardless of the way things go, I wanted him to know straight up from yesterday, look, we are going to go with you and let’s respond.”

Story came off the bench in the opener against Eastern Illinois and threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns, completing over 70 percent of his passes. He fared much worse in his second game, in which he was the starter at Colorado State. That game, Storey completed only five of 13 passes and had two interceptions before being benched in favor of Kelley.

Morris wasn’t the only coach to speak highly on the attributes of Storey, offensive coordinator Joe Craddock offered up this take on the redshirt junior.

“One thing about Ty, like I’ve said all along, he’s a hard worker. He comes to work every day and gives his teammates the best Ty Storey he can every day with a great attitude,” Craddock said during his latest media availability. “I’ve seen him really push other guys and lead. I think the games that he’s got in, obviously the first game, he did some really good things for us. Was able to lead us on a couple of drives that put us in the end zone. We will definitely go back and look at those plays and those series that he was in there and see what fits this week and see what we can build on moving forward with Ty.”

If this decision doesn’t pay off, it’s hard to see Arkansas going back to Kelley anytime soon. Where will the team turn in that event? Morris’ first season in Fayetteville will likely end with a true freshmen calling the shots under center. While normally that’s cause for concern, based on what we’ve seen to this point, that may be the only saving grace this offense has in 2018.
