Last month, Memphis guard Jamal Johnson announced he was going to leave the Tigers and explore transfer options.

On Saturday, he officially signed his paperwork to become a different kind of Tiger, as he’ll head to Auburn to join coach Bruce Pearl’s program.

Via a release on AuburnTigers.com, Pearl said he’s excited to have the talented 6-3 guard heading to The Plains:

“We’re really excited about Jamal coming in,” head coach Bruce Pearl said. “I watched him a lot in high school. He’s got a great family and he’s a hard worker. [Former Memphis head coach] Tubby Smith had amazing things to say about what kind of kid he is, how he trains and what kind of teammate he is. He played 27 minutes (per game) in the American Conference at Memphis. He got a lot of experience as freshman. We’re excited to have him come to Auburn, Alabama.”

Johnson, a Birmingham native, averaged 6.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and one assist in 34 games (26 starts) for the Tigers in 2017-18.

He’ll have to sit out the 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer rules, but he’ll have three years of eligibility remaining starting in the 2019-20 season.
