From 1997 to 2001, the Auburn offensive line was anchored by Kendall Simmons, who went on to be a first-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft.

He played most of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning two Super Bowls. He also had brief stints with the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills before retiring.

Now, he’s returning to his alma mater. Per a release from Auburn, Simmons will join the Tigers in an off-field capacity:

“I’m extremely excited,” said Simmons, a 2002 first-round draft choice by the Pittsburgh Steelers. “I’ll look forward to the opportunity to be around the team, learning as well as adding my knowledge from my playing career.

“Coach Malzahn has always been good to me over the years. I really appreciate the opportunity he’s given me to come in and be a part of the staff. I’m going to do the best I can. I’m going to work hard and try to learn as much as I can from Coach Malzahn, Coach Grimes and whoever else I have an opportunity to come in contact with, so I’m excited about it.”

What exactly Simmons will be doing for the program remains to be seen, but having him around will be good for the Tigers.
