Former Auburn OL Shon Coleman — the third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2016 — has a great mentor in fellow Browns OL Joe Thomas, who has made it to 10 Pro Bowls in his outstanding career.

After only appearing in seven games and playing for only 62 snaps as a rookie, Coleman is working hard this offseason so he can make a bigger impact in 2017.

Considering that Browns’ quarterbacks were sacked an NFL-worst 66 times last season, the team can use all the help it can get.

Following some mentoring sessions with Thomas, Coleman — who dealt with and defeated leukemia during his time at Auburn — is seemingly ready to seize control of a starting job.

According to ESPN.com, Thomas thinks Coleman has a great chance to open the year as the team’s starting right tackle:

“I think he’s got all the ability to do it,” Thomas said, “but there’s just a matter of him going out there and proving that he can, because he hasn’t had a lot of NFL action yet and there is a difference between showing in practice that you can do it and being able to show in a game that you can. So I think the jury is still out, but he’s definitely the favorite.”

At 6-6 and 310 pounds, Coleman definitely has the size to handle some of the NFL’s more dominant pass rushers. Heading into the summer training camps and preseason games, the team will be able to get a good feel on whether he’s ready to play in all 16 games or not.
