Ahead of this weekend’s clash with hated rival Alabama in the Iron Bowl, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn offered multiple injury updates to key players within the offense:

Pettway hasn’t featured in the last two games. It would be a boon for Auburn to get a semi-healthy Pettway for this weekend’s game. Not only is he the leading rusher on the team, but Pettway sets the tone with his physicality and energy.

Cox — the team’s starting H-back — is an often overlooked player within the scheme. He’s an excellent blocker, and has the ability to pave holes and running lanes for the likes of Pettway and Kerryon Johnson. He also has the ability to catch passes out of the backfield — something Auburn could utilize on play-action looks.

As for the quarterback position, it’s truly up in the air.

Starter Sean White has been battling a shoulder injury for weeks. In the loss to Georgia, White had trouble throwing the ball beyond 10 yards. He sat last week versus Alabama A&M in favor of Jeremy Johnson — who went 14-of-19 for 147 yards and one touchdown, and also rushed for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

Johnson is the superior athlete, and is the healthier option of the two. However, White has been arguably the most efficient signal-caller in the conference, and has done a great job of commanding the offense.

It will be fascinating to see what Malzahn opts to do on Saturday.
