Auburn fans are frustrated with the team’s 4-3 start to the season, as there were major College Football Playoff aspirations in the fanbase heading into the year.

Fans are already calling for coach Gus Malzahn to be fired, even though he just signed a 7-year, $49-million contract extension this past offseason.

On Saturday morning’s SEC Nation, analyst Marcus Spears urged Auburn fans to stick with Malzahn through the rough year:

“You get what you earn,” Spears said. “And in the eyes of the Auburn faithful, Gus Malzahn earned a 7-year, $49-million contract for what they were able to do last season. There is no backing out of that now. Hindsight is 20/20. Anybody can be a good coach or a bad coach when a win or a loss happens.

“Here’s what I will say about this conference: We are so quick to fire a coach. Just last year, we were sitting in Week 11 having the conversation about Auburn possibly getting in the College Football Playoff. We are eight weeks into a new season and people are already calling for his job. Same thing happened with Ed Orgeron at LSU last year. …

“Look, pump the brakes on Gus Malzahn a little bit. Just last year, this team was in the conversation at the most important time of the year. They’re having a bad go at it.”

The Tigers play Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon. A loss in that game will have Tiger fans even more fired up to get rid of their high-priced coach.
