While Auburn’s new quarterback has been receiving the majority of the hype on the Plains this offseason, those that know the Tiger offense best understand the attack runs through running back Kamryn Pettway. If you weren’t aware of that fact before, perhaps you should hear how high the Auburn running back is shooting for in 2017.

During his media session Wednesday night, Pettway was asked if he had any individual goals for the upcoming season. He certainly didn’t shy away from one goal he has his eyes set on — watch out Tre Mason, Pettway is coming for you.

“My individual goal is to break the school rushing record but whatever I can do to help my team is my biggest goal,” Pettway said.

Mason rushed for 1,816 yards in 2013 while making 14 appearances for the Tigers in the team’s run to the final BCS National Championship Game. While that record may seem insurmountable, Pettway averaged 136 rushing yards per game last season in his nine appearances. During his record-breaking season, Mason averaged just over 129 rushing yards per game.

“I know I have some big shoes to fill, but with hard work, I feel like I can get it,” Pettway continued.

Should he enter the season at full strength and be aided by the help of one of the more talented quarterbacks in the SEC in 2017, the sky is the limit for Pettway and the Auburn offense. Something that’s apparently not lost on the Tigers as the team gets geared up for what could be a special season.

For Pettway to realistically challenge the team rushing record, a trip to the SEC Championship Game and potentially a Playoff berth would likely be needed. If both of those things happen for Auburn this year, it would be a solid assumption that Pettway made good on his personal goal entering the season.
