No Sunday or Monday action in Week 2. While No. 16 TCU played on Friday, the other 24 ranked teams played on Saturday (with one game going past midnight for all CFB fans except those in the Pacific time zone).

Of the games involving the 24 ranked teams, ranked-on-ranked action was limited to two games: No. 3 Georgia at No. 24 South Carolina and No. 17 USC at No. 10 Stanford. Fans hoping for upsets came away disappointed as the higher-ranked team won both games.

The other 21 teams all faced unranked opponents. All but two of those 21 teams –No. 15 Michigan State and No. 25 Florida – took care of business against their unranked opponents, though Texas A&M came close to knocking off No. 2 Clemson.

With the vast majority of the teams now sporting 2-0 records, one would expect USC and Michigan State to drop below many of the undefeated teams. Also look for two spots – Nos. 24 and 25 – to open up with South Carolina and Florida exiting the polls. The Gamecocks’ and Gators’ misfortunes may keep the Spartans and Trojans from falling all the way out of the poll.

Wildcats fans may be expecting to see UK enter the poll after knocking off a ranked UF team, but Big Blue Nation probably shouldn’t get its hopes up. Few would have said that South Carolina and Florida’s Week 1 wins over Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern were worthy of entry into the AP Top 25, but the Gamecocks and Gators were slotted into the two open spots. It appeared the voters simply bumped up the two unranked teams which had received the most votes in the preseason poll. If the voters do the same for the Week 3 poll, Utah and Oklahoma State will be filling the spots opened up by the departing Gamecocks and Gators.
