Arguably the most gifted athlete participating in Florida’s Pro Day event this week didn’t even suit up for the team in 2017. Of course, that player is former Gator receiver, Antonio Callaway.

While he excelled on the field when healthy, far too often Callaway found himself involved in one off the field issue after another. Many believed Jim McElwain only gave the outstanding receiver so many chances due to the fact the Florida program lacked any other explosive playmakers outside of Callaway. His involvement in the offseason credit card fraud case proved to be one strike too many, however, and he never played for the Gators following that scandal.

With his college career behind him, he’s hoping to land on an NFL roster. However, here’s an example of the uphill battle he faces. From his NFL.com draft profile page, one AFC team pro personnel director had this to say about Callaway:

“I just watched him. Really natural athlete and pretty good player but there are just too many headaches to deal with so I can’t see us taking a chance on him. Our owner will say no and I don’t even think we would put him on our board to be honest.”

Following his workout on the field during Florida’s Pro Day, Callaway met with the media to discuss his chances of landing on an NFL roster. Of course, his behavior off the field was the subject of the majority of the questions more so than his workout or his production on the field. The Gainesville Sun posted a video of Callaway’s session with the media following at the Pro Day event.

Question: What have you done to prove an NFL team should take a chance on you?

Callaway: “I mean, somebody’s got to believe in me, you know? There isn’t much I can do. Just do what I got to do.”

Question: What do you say when they ask you about how you’ve changed from last year?

Callaway: “That experience right there took me away from the game I love. Humbled me. Showed me how much I even love the game. I thought I loved it but being away really showed me how much I love it.”

Question: Have you changed in the rest of your life though, outside of football?

Callaway: “I ain’t got no choice. I’ve got a daughter. I ain’t got no choice but to (change).”

While those questions don’t really get to the heart of the matter, the former Gator did finish with a strong message to any NFL team that is willing to take one final chance on him.

“Whoever takes a shot with me, I’ll give it everything I got — (they) ain’t going to be disappointed,” Callaway said.
