With 8:19 left in the second quarter of Saturday’s Florida-Tennessee game, UT made a bold attempt to grab some momentum at a crucial moment, trailing UF 3-23.

Jeremy Pruitt’s gamble almost worked. Vols QB Jarrett Guarantano found TE Austin Pope, who took off down the left sideline. A TD looked likely, but Gators CB CJ Henderson kept at his pursuit of Pope. When he caught Pope and made the tackle, the ball came out and rolled through the end zone.

If you believe it’s all about momentum, this was the play of the game. Henderson, however, didn’t even realize the significance of what had happened. Out of gas, he went to the sideline. He didn’t even realize he had caused a fumble which became a touchback because it rolled through the end zone.

Instead, Florida cornerback C.J. Henderson never gave up on the play, pursuing and catching up to Pope inside the 10-yard line and tackling him near the 5. As Henderson made the tackle, he forced the ball out of Pope’s hands and the fumble went through the end zone for a touchback and turnover.

“I didn’t even know,” Henderson said in postgame. “I had to catch my breath when I got to the sideline. I saw the offense on the field, so I knew I turned over the ball.”

Henderson, a known speedster, said he never questioned giving up on the play, a sign that Mullen’s demand for “relentless effort” has been taken to heart.

“It happens a lot, you catch a lot of guys on big open runs,” he told the media. “He ran in the open field. I knew it wasn’t over so I had to run and stop the play.”
