Kyle Trask took advantage of some extra snaps in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ preseason game Saturday night against the New York Jets.

Trask posted a stat line of 20-of-28 passing for 218 yards and 1 touchdown in Saturday’s game. The former Florida quarterback was not supposed to play the second half, but Tampa Bay’s third QB, John Wolford, left the game on a stretcher in the 3rd quarter. Bucs coach Todd Bowles said he opted to put Trask back in the game because he was already warmed up. Baker Mayfield, who is competing with Trask for the Bucs’ starting job, did not play Saturday.

In his postgame press conference, Bowles said he liked what he saw from Trask.

“Poise in the pocket. A lot more athleticism. He used his legs when he had to, and he was very successful at that. Threw the ball where he was supposed to throw it. Threw some pinpoint passes. Like to have a few plays back. But overall, saw a lot of poise and a lot of growth. I thought he did well.”

Trask also impressed Aaron Rodgers. The Jets QB took notice of one of Trask’s throws while joining the team’s broadcast.

Mayfield sitting out Saturday’s game has prompted some speculation that Bowles has settled on his Week 1 starter. Bowles said after Saturday’s game that there’s no timetable to deciding on QB1. Trask made a strong case to keep the competition going.
