Mark Richt plans on staying in Miami for the foreseeable future.

The school announced a contract extension Thursday for the face of the Hurricane football program after only two seasons on the job. Richt’s new contract will run until the 2023 football season.

The former Georgia coach has gone 19-7 in his two seasons with Miami, including leading the program to its first 10-win season since 2003. Richt’s team is also coming off an ACC Coastal Division championship.

“We’re excited about where this program is headed,” Richt said via a released statement from Miami. “I want to thank Blake James, Jennifer Strawley and our entire athletics administration for supporting our coaches, staff and student-athletes, ensuring that we’re committed to building on the great legacy of Hurricanes football.

“Miami is not only my alma mater, it is home to me and my family. It’s a blessing to live and work in paradise.”

The timing of this news is somewhat interesting, as Georgia is expected to announce a new deal for Richt’s replacement in Athens at any moment. Could that be a coincidence, or is Miami sending a message of support for Richt following Georgia’s epic 2017 season?

Either way, Georgia’s decision to hire Kirby Smart looks like a stroke of genius while Richt has managed to find success while entering his glory years like many other residents of South Florida.
