Brian VanGorder served as Georgia’s defensive coordinator under former head coach Mark Richt from 2001-04, when the team won two SEC East titles and one conference championship.

Now, after stints in the NFL and at some other premier college programs, VanGorder is back with the Bulldogs in a consulting capacity, according to a report by Chip Towers of the AJC’s DawgNation.

In the report, Towers notes that people with knowledge of the situation claim that the former defensive coordinator helped Georgia with its gameplan against Auburn. The Bulldogs limited the Tigers to just 164 total yards and did not allow a first down in the second half.

VanGorder’s experience only adds to Georgia’s wealth on the defensive side of the ball. Head coach Kirby Smart had been one of college football’s top defensive coordinators prior to accepting his current job, and Mel Tucker is another veteran coordinator for the Bulldogs.

It remains to be seen what type of role VanGorder will have with the team moving forward, but Smart’s mentor, Nick Saban, has always valued bringing in former coaches in a consulting capacity.
