Georgia is considered the favorite to land Alabama transfer Caleb Downs out of the transfer portal, according to a report.

Per 247Sports’ John Talty and Matt Zenitz, who note that Downs has not yet officially entered the portal. Downs announced his intentions to do so on Wednesday morning.

Downs is widely-regarded as one of the best players to enter the portal so far this offseason, regardless of position. As a true freshman safety in 2023 at Alabama, Downs recorded 107 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and 4 pass breakups.

Downs also arrived in Tuscaloosa with extremely high prospect pedigree. A former 5-star recruit, he was the No. 6 overall player and the No. 1 safety in the country for the class of 2023, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Downs has multiple connections to Georgia’s program. For one, he is a Georgia native who was heavily recruited by the Bulldogs coming out of high school. Georgia, Ohio State and Notre Dame were the other finalists alongside Alabama in Downs’ recruitment.

If Downs does transfer to Georgia, he would be following former Alabama defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson to Athens. Robinson left Tuscaloosa for a role on Kirby Smart’s staff earlier this offseason. Robinson will serve as UGA’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2024.

Downs would not be the first ex-Alabama defensive back to transfer to Georgia this offseason. Last week, former Tide defensive back Jake Pope committed to Georgia.

Downs will have 3 years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
