Looking at the ratings from Monday night, there’s no doubt which way college football’s television ratings are trending in the fourth year of the College Football Playoff. The numbers are through the roof.

ESPN has announced that the Rose Bowl between Georgia and Oklahoma registered the second-highest television rating of the Playoff era. The game drew a 14.8 overnight rating (on ESPN + ESPN2), up 29% from last season’s first CFP Semifinal game. The ESPN only coverage of the Rose Bowl drew a 14.2 overnight rating.

The Sugar Bowl matchup of Alabama and Clemson also did well, as the game drew a 12.5 overnight rating (on ESPN + ESPN2) according to ESPN. That rating is up 19% from last year’s second CFP Semifinal game.

The only Semifinal Playoff game to out-rate the latest Rose Bowl was the first CFP Rose Bowl as Oregon met Florida State (Jan. 1, 2015). The Ducks won that game to advance to the first College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
