No. 2 Georgia went on the road in the SEC and came out with a win Saturday, and that’s always good. It wasn’t always pretty, and there were definitely a few issues, but when the day is all said and done, a 43-29 win against Missouri and dangerous quarterback Drew Lock is a very good thing.

Georgia is 2-0 in the SEC, with both wins coming on the road against South Carolina and Missouri, the two teams that could finish second and third in the SEC East. They are out of the way now. Did the Bulldogs look like the No. 2 team in the country on Saturday? No, they certainly did not, but a win is a win and there were also plenty of good things to be happy about.

Here’s what I liked — and what I didn’t like — from Saturday’s win over Missouri:

What I liked

Defense forced mistakes early

In both SEC wins, it was the defense that put the first points on the board for Georgia, and the impact of that can never be ignored. This time it was freshman cornerback Tyson Campbell, who stripped the ball from Missouri tight end Albert Okwuegbunam and dashed 64 yards for a score. Playing from ahead — especially on the road — is huge.

Special teams made a difference, mostly

Georgia blocked a punt and scored to make it 20-7 when Eric Stokes came in free to block the kick and carry it into the end zone. There were also two nice punt returns and three nice kickoff  returns that helped swing field positions. Field-goal kicking was another matter (see below), the only ding on this third side of the game.

Fromm didn’t panic after slow start

Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm struggled early, but once he got going in the second half, he looked great. He had touchdown passes to Riley Ridley (33 yards) Jeremiah Holloman (61 yards) and Mecole Hardman (54 yards) in the second half. He finished 13-for-23 passing for 260 yards.

Pass rush was better, despite the stats

D’Andre Walker finally got 2 sacks and now Georgia has 3 on the year. They still aren’t getting opposing quarterbacks on the ground enough, but the pressure was there on Missouri QB Drew Lock all day. The sack numbers might have to wait, but it’s clear they’re coming.

Big picture: 2 SEC road wins is huge

Getting road wins at South Carolina and Missouri by mid-September is a huge thing. No one really thinks Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee or Vanderbilt can run the table, right? Sure, there are many challenges ahead for Georgia, but getting these two wins early, and winning them comfortably enough by 14 and 24 points, is a good thing.

What I didn’t like

Offense was far too quiet in the first half

If it weren’t for first-half touchdowns from the defense and special teams, Georgia might have been in trouble because the offense wasn’t doing anything. The first drive ended with an interception, and the second with a punt. They settled for field goals twice, and missed a field goal attempt right after that. Is there a reason to panic? Of course not, but it’s enough to be concerned a little bit.

Field-goal kicking had a rough day

All-SEC kicker Rodrigo Blankenship made three field goals, but he also missed one from 49 yards and had another attempt blocked. We’ve come to expect perfection from Blankenship and this group, so the two hiccups are worrisome.

Getting pushed around more than expected

Georgia likes to play the bully on the block, but you’ve got to give Missouri credit because they pushed back quite a bit, too. It’s hard to say who was the most physical team. “We didn’t play with discipline, composure, or really that much physicality when you look at the run game for us and stopping the run defensively,” Kirby Smart said.
