It’s not often the reigning SEC Freshman of the Year has to be concerned about losing his job the following offseason but Georgia is quickly turning into a program that is anything but usual.

That’s not to say Jake Fromm is likely to lose his role as the program’s starting quarterback, it would be a major upset if anyone other than the sophomore takes the first snap in Georgia’s Sept. 1 season opener against Austin Peay, but some are going to ask that question all offseason until the team announces a starter for the game following the addition of five-star QB and early enrollee Justin Fields.

During his recent media availability, Fromm discussed his improvement from this time last year after everything he went through as he experienced the wild ride that was Georgia’s 2017 season. Being in the system and on campus for a second spring is a major advantage Fromm has going for him this offseason.

“Definitely now I have a whole lot better understanding of everything,” Fromm said. “I have an idea of what’s going on, and it’s been going really well… Coming here, you definitely get a football education. You learn a whole lot about football. Being your first year of college, you grow up a lot and learn a lot in that respect. Coming through what we went through last year, we learned a lot about our team, and we are continuing to do that.”

As one would expect following last offseason’s quarterback competition in Athens, which was initially won by Jacob Eason but then there was no second-guessing from either QB following Fromm’s ascension into the starting role once Eason went down to injury in the season opener against Appalachian State, Fromm has welcomed the addition of Fields this spring with open arms.

Fromm expects Fields to push him, and the team, into becoming a better all-around program this spring and moving forward.

“Absolutely. I expect nothing but for Justin to come out and compete,” Fromm added. “Everybody in that quarterback room is competing and working really hard. At the end of the day, we are making the team a lot better, and anyway we can help the team as a room and as a unit we are going to do it.”

It’s no surprise to see a lack of drama from Fromm. While it’s unlikely Fields sits the entire season and may take away some snaps from Fromm, it would be a surprise if Georgia’s starting QB did anything other than embrace an expanded role for the freshman phenom as he continues to grow more comfortable with the offensive system in place in Athens.
