Kirby Smart and the Georgia offense are still dealing with the absence of star receiver Ladd McConkey. While it’s still unclear when the receiver might be cleared to return, Smart was asked Tuesday evening about replacing the production in the offense.

The Bulldogs have a number of players capable of filling the void with similar skill sets per Smart. However, the experience McConkey brings to the table is something that cannot be replaced.

“We have guys that have similar skill sets, they don’t have the experience. We’ve got guys capable to fill the void (left) by Ladd, but we don’t have guys with the experience in this offense,” said Smart. “I mean, 2 years, 15 games a year, 30 games experience is immense, so that’s the part we miss.”

Smart was unable to provide an update on McConkey’s potential availability as of Tuesday. He said the Bulldogs are trying to figure out ways to speed up the process but McConkey still hasn’t been available.

“As far as his availability, he hasn’t been available. He’s been injured. He’s trying to come back and we’re trying to figure out all that we can do to speed that process up,” Smart explained.

While tight end Brock Bowers led the team in receiving last year, McConkey was Georgia’s top WR with 58 catches for 762 yards. McConkey also tied Bowers for the team lead with 7 receiving touchdowns.

So far in 2023, Mekhi Mews leads Georgia with 6 catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. Rara Thomas also has 90 yards, but that has come via just 3 catches in the first 2 games.
