Just when you thought Bulldogs’ receiving corps couldn’t get much better for the upcoming season, Demetris Robertson announced he would transfer from Cal to Georgia.

The former five-star high school recruit from Savannah, Ga., has returned to the Peach State to finish his collegiate career but it remains unknown if he will be able to compete for the Bulldogs this season. Georgia has issued a waiver request with the NCAA that would allow Robertson to compete in the fall if approved by the NCAA.

During his Friday afternoon media availability, Smart was asked about Robertson’s status after two Florida receivers — Van Jefferson (transfer from Ole Miss) and Trevon Grimes (transfer from Ohio State) — received similar waivers from the NCAA, making them eligible immediately for the coming season. While that would appear to be a great sign for Robertson and Georgia, Smart said not to read much into that.

“It is handled on a case-by-case basis. Each one is independent. We are hopeful, but it is out of our hands,” Smart said on Friday. “The NCAA will get back to us (one the decision on Robertson has been made).”

Smart added, “I think it would be presumptuous to think (the results of any other approved waiver would be) advantageous to us.”

During his two seasons at Cal, Robertson racked up 57 catches for 837 yards and seven touchdowns. His production was significantly altered following a season-ending injury as a sophomore, as most of that production was put up as a true freshman for the Bears. Robertson was one of the fastest players to come out of high school in the 2016 recruiting class.
