Kirby Smart faced the need to make adjustments at halftime last week against South Carolina. Ahead of this week’s game against UAB, Smart spoke on WJOX in Birmingham, Alabama with Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic.

“We just talked about composure, and playing one play at a time, one moment at a time,” Smart said. “We knew the stops were there, we had them 3rd and 15 or so I think in the first touchdown of the game and they caught us in nice call there with a screen against a pressure, and we missed a tackle. So if we don’t do that, it’s a field goal there.”

The other adjustments were about Spencer Rattler, and how to pressure the South Carolina quarterback.

“We knew if offense could cash in some touchdowns, we would gain a lot of momentum from our crowd,” Smart said. “The biggest difference in the second half was just momentum in general.”

Smart acknowledged a question from McElroy about slow starts in games, but Smart said that’s only happened once this season.

“I don’t know that it’s all just the start as much as it is red area,” Smart said. “We’ve got to play better defense and offense in the red area.”

After Smart revealed that the number of injuries on the team is the highest in his time at Georgia, he has only lowered the volume at practice, not the intensity.

“We’re still getting after it in practice, and maybe instead of a rack of 5, we’re doing a rack of 3,” he said.
