Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs held their annual spring scrimmage on Saturday. It was our first look at the reigning national champions as they prepare for an attempt to repeat in 2022.

An area of concern for the Bulldogs is the receiving corps. After losing Jermaine Burton to Alabama and George Pickens to the NFL Draft, the Dawgs don’t have a ton of depth at the position.

After Saturday’s scrimmage, Smart weighed in on the state of Georgia’s receivers (via 247Sports):

“Yeah, I think we got better. We still aren’t where we need to be. I feel really good we have Ladd (McConkey) and A.D. (Mitchell). They’re SEC wideouts who can compete at a high level. But, you go past that, Marcus (Rosemy-Jacksaint) has done a tremendous job. He’s extremely smart and can play all positions. We don’t have like, OK, ‘this guy has a hamstring, who’s going in?’ We don’t have that. We’ve got to grow that. We got to get Arian [Smith] and Jackson [Meeks] and CJ [Smith] and De’Nylon [Morrissette] up to speed. A day like today is getting them closer. But we’re not there yet. We have to continue to grow.

You look at Arian. He has an elite trait and we try to use that elite trait as much as possible. But we’re not where we need to be at wideout. We have some more guys coming.”

With guys like Kearis Jackson and Dom Blaylock in the slot, Georgia has some talent there. But, on the exterior, developing a playmaker like Pickens and some depth is going to be critical to the team’s success this fall.

We’ll see if Smart and the Bulldogs can get some guys up to speed before Week 1’s showdown against Oregon in Atlanta. If not, former Georgia DC Dan Lanning and the Ducks could pull off a surprising upset.
