Before his Buffalo squad faced Kentucky in Round 2 of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, Nate Oats had some harsh words for John Calipari. Immediately after losing to the Wildcats by 20 points (95-75 was the final score), Oats did a complete 180 after Calipari’s squad put him in his place.

If you missed his comments on Friday, here’s what Oats originally said about Calipari heading into the Round of 32 matchup:

“Calipari’s been whining about no experience — young, young, young. Well, we don’t have that problem. We got some veteran guys.”

While Kentucky may not have any veteran guys, Saturday proved how valuable experience really is when matched up against a team with vastly superior talent. Spoiler alert if you missed the game: it didn’t mean much.

Oats immediately did an about-face following his team’s destruction. The Buffalo coach admitted he regrets his comments and claimed he apologized to Calipari. Oats quotes come via John Clay of the Lexington Herald-Leader:

I’ll tell you this, I apologized to him before the game. I used the word “whining,” that’s a bad word choice of him talking about their youth all year. I don’t know why I chose that word. Big Blue Nation certainly let me know about it, don’t want to let them mad, they’re tweeting all day long.

I apologized to him. He said he didn’t take it the wrong way. I’ve got a ton of respect for him. Used to go to his program in Memphis, we ran the dribble drive at Romulus, basically because of what he did at Memphis. We had a good talk before the game. I don’t know what he felt bad about. He’s a good guy. I appreciated it, but he didn’t need to.

The lesson here? Teams like Buffalo would be wise not to challenge Kentucky heading into NCAA Tournament showdowns. It likely isn’t going to end well.
