Kentucky basketball received a huge boost for the 2018-19 season Wednesday as Stanford’s Reid Travis announced he will be transferring to UK. The former all-Pac-12 forward averaged 19.5 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game and will be immediately eligible to play for the Wildcats.

“That changes things,” writes ESPN’s Myrom Medcalf in regards to the upcoming season. Medcalf now ranks John Calipari’s squad No. 1 in the World Wide Leader’s Way-Too-Early Top 25.

“The arrival of Reid Travis gives Kentucky one of the nation’s top big men, a player who recorded 16 double-doubles last season, but has not played with the elite athletes he’ll join in Lexington,” Medcalf writes. “The former five-star recruit might be the strongest player in college basketball. He’s a force around the rim who made 56 percent of his shots inside the arc.”

Of course Big Blue Nation has more to be excited about than just Travis. PJ Washington will help give UK a very athletic front-court and 5-star prospect E.J. Montgomery will also be in the mix. The big men should help open up opportunities for 5-star wing talents Ashton Hagans, Immanuel Quickley and Keldon Johnson. The Cats also return Quade Green.

As the title of the poll suggests, it’s way too early to be thinking about next year’s March Madness, but right now, Kentucky is looking like the team to beat.
