Mark Stoops surprised a Kentucky walk-on wide receiver with a scholarship on Monday.

Cole Lanter, a Danville, KY native, was notified of the decision at the end of a practice.

Here’s video:

“Good Ol’ Kentucky guy right here,” said Stoops, arm around Lanter. “Been here a year and a half. Passed on scholarship opportunities. He bet on himself, he wanted to be a part of this program. And we wanted to reward him with a scholarship.”

Lanter and Stoops were then swarmed by the team in celebration of the news.

Lanter was a star for Boyle County High School where he collected 78 catches for 1,288 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior. The local product then walked on with the Wildcats for the 2022 season.

The Wildcats are set to open the season on Saturday, playing host to the Ball State Cardinals.
