After losing to Ole Miss in a poor defensive performance on Saturday, Brian Kelly knew he had to make some changes.

One of those changes was adding defensive line specialist Pete Jenkins to his staff Sunday evening. Kelly said that Jenkins “will be consulting and assisting” the defensive line room alongside John Jancek.

Kelly is hoping that the addition of Jenkins will help his defensive line get to a better place. He didn’t like what he saw on Saturday night and knew that he had to make some changes to see improvement.

“We’ve got to maximize the potential of our defensive line,” Kelly said in his press conference Monday. “We’re in conversations about, ‘Are we doing that?'”

But he still has full confidence in defensive coordinator Matt House in his second year.

“There is one leader on our defense, and I have the utmost confidence he’ll be able to run it efficiently,” Kelly said.

Ultimately, the loss on Saturday wasn’t entirely on the defense. Kelly believes the team and coaches could have been been better as a whole and now it’s about making the necessary changes.

“The blame does not lie at the feet of one person,” Kelly said. “This is a collective situation where we’ve got to coach better and play better.”
