What a difference one month makes for head coach Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers.

Just one month go, coach O was the hometown hero leading the Tigers to a season-opening win inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. LSU shutout BYU 27-0 to begin the season.

The Tigers started 2-0 before a rude awakening that came courtesy of the Mississippi State Bulldogs. MSU piled on in a 37-7 victory in a rivalry that LSU is used to dominating.

Things hit a new low for coach O Saturday. The Tigers did the unthinkable in losing to Troy 24-21 at home. Troy outplayed and outcoached LSU, and coach O has gone from hero to the hot seat in one short month.

Orgeron is just five games into his contract, and the deal contains a mind-boggling $12 million buyout that likely ensures his job security for a year or two.

According to Dennis Dodd with CBS Sports, LSU has become similar to Nebraska in that the Tigers need to find a new AD before focusing on the the issues with the head coach:

The blueprint here, believe it or not, should be Nebraska. Last month, that school’s administration fired athletic director Shawn Eichorst three weeks into the season. The unstated reason was the same one Alleva shouldn’t survive on the job one working day longer.

He can’t be trusted to hire the next coach if it’s this month or three years from now. Alleva has maneuvered this starship of a program into tractor beam of mediocrity.

The rest of the season will be an interesting one for the Tigers. Coach O will try and improve the product on the field, but it may be time to rebuild the entire program with a new AD.
