PHILADELPHIA — The Dallas Cowboys selected Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and watched as he immediately became one of the league’s best runners.

This year, the team picking at No. 4 — the Jacksonville Jaguars — could also use a running back and might have their sights set on former LSU star Leonard Fournette, who is considered by many draft analysts to be the best back in the 2017 class.

However, Maurice Jones-Drew, one of the best running backs in Jaguars history, doesn’t think Fournette should follow in his footsteps.

As Jacksonville continues to build a squad that can compete in the AFC South division, Jones-Drew said Wednesday that there are other weaknesses his former team needs to address before they draft their running back of the future.

“To me, I don’t like that fit per se, because the Jags’ offensive line isn’t ready for that,” he said during a pre-draft interview session in Philadelphia. “I think you need to build more of what I call the front six — your tight end and your O-linemen. You have to do those things first before you put a running back back there.”

He said his career, during which he ran for 8,167 yards and 68 touchdowns over nine seasons (eight with the Jags), was helped greatly by the strong offensive line Jacksonville had in the late-2000s.

“When I was in Jacksonville, we had guards that weighed 350-360 pounds that were moving guys off the field, so it was easy for me to go and showcase my ability. When you don’t have that, you see what’s happening now — guys are struggling and making cuts in the backfield and things like that.”

But don’t take Jones-Drew’s comments to mean he thinks Fournette will fail in the NFL. Quite the opposite, in fact.

He just thinks the team picking No. 8 overall would be a better fit for the former Tiger.

“Oh, Carolina,” he said without hesitation when asked which team would be the best fit for Fournette. “I think his running style in their scheme is a perfect fit. That marriage would last a long time.”

MJD continued, saying that Fournette reminds him of the powerful runners the Panthers have employed over the past several years.

“He’s a downhill runner and a very violent runner,” Jones-Drew said. “If you remember Jonathan Stewart and those guys, that’s what they want to bring — they want to wear teams down. They give Cam (Newton) the ball as well. Fournette I think in Carolina is the best fit. They’re more of a downhill, play-action pass, run team.”

Though Jones-Drew makes a good case for why Fournette would be a great fit in Carolina, it’s still unlikely that the LSU star will fall that far.

However, crazier things have happened, so it’ll be interesting to see how the top 10 picks play out on Thursday night in Philadelphia.
