LSU struck first in Monday night’s College World Series winners’ bracket game, but the No. 5 seed Tigers could not hold on against No. 1 seed Wake Forest. In another 1-run game, the Demon Deacons came out on top 3–2 in a dramatic finish.

LSU broke the scoring ice in the 3rd inning. Tommy White’s RBI single plated the first run.

White came around to score when a Wake Forest outfielder’s misfortune became LSU’s gain as a Tre’ Morgan fly ball to left field turned into an RBI triple.

LSU held a 2-0 lead at the end of the 3rd inning. Wake Forest finally got on the board in the 6th inning, tying things up 2-2.

The Tigers appeared prime to take a late lead in the 8th inning when they had 1st and 3rd with nobody out. The Demon Deacons, though, got out of the jam.

Morgan was tagged out at home for the 1st out. The play at the plate was as close as it gets, going to replay and being confirmed as out. A double play would end the top of the 8th and keep it a 2-2 game.

After the big plays in the field, Wake Forest’s momentum carried into the bottom of the 8th inning at the plate. The Demon Deacons took a 3-2 lead on a Bennett Lee RBI single, scoring Danny Corona.

On the mound, Wake Forest starter Josh Hartle went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, striking out 9 and walking 4. The Demon Deacons used 3 relievers to secure the win.

LSU has faced many questions about its pitching beyond superstar starter Paul Skenes, but Monday’s loss isn’t on the Tiger hurlers. Ty Floyd went 5 innings in the start, allowing 2 earned runs on 2 hits, striking 10 while walking 4. Thatcher Hurd picked up the loss for the 8th inning, the only run he allowed in 3 innings of relief on 3 hits, with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks.

LSU will play Tennessee in an elimination game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. The winner of that game will face Wake Forest, needing to beat the Demon Deacons twice to advance to the CWS finals. On Saturday, the Tigers defeated UT 6-3 as Skenes struck out 12 Volunteers.
