This weekend’s matchup between LSU and Alabama is among the most anticipated in college football, party because of the Tigers’ resurgence under interim coach Ed Orgeron.

Since taking over from longtime head coach Les Miles, Orgeron has LSU on a three-game winning streak with an average margin of victory of 29 points.

Despite Orgeron’s success, ESPN’s Trevor Matich appeared on The Paul Finebaum Show and explained why he thinks nothing LSU’s interim coach achieves this season should guarantee him the full-time job.

“I do not agree that if he wins this game against Alabama, or even if he wins out, that he should be given the job because of that,” Matich told Finebaum. “Because winning and managing the game week as an interim coach is important, but it’s only one small part of being a head coach and building and sustaining a successful program.”

Orgeron has been a head coach in the SEC before, leading Ole Miss for three seasons and compiling a 10-25 record, and likely understands the rigors that come along with assuming the position on a permanent basis.

If Orgeron helps LSU unseat No. 1 Alabama and win out the rest of the way, it may be enough to get the Tigers into the SEC Championship game and give fans a reason to want him there for the future.

Still, Matich doesn’t think on-field success can prove Orgeron is capable of the other aspects of being a head coach. For a program that consistently dominated recruiting rankings yet failed to meet expectations on the field, seeing a strong on-field product might be the most important aspect for LSU fans.

“These things are all important that have nothing to do with managing game week,” Matich said. “These are things that LSU should demand of Ed Orgeron, that he prove to them, that he sell them, that he can do at the highest level. Not just manage the weekly game-to-game process, which he’s doing a very good job of right now.”
