Believe it or not, Mississippi State is on its way to giving the No. 36 jersey to incoming freshman defensive lineman Jeffrey Simmons. The number honors the memory of former MSU lineman Nick Bell, who passed away in 2010 after battling cancer.

According to Mississippi State’s official roster page, Simmons is the only player currently listed at No. 36 for the 2016 season.

Since Bell’s passing, Bulldog players have taken turns wearing the number to honor Bell, with no one player taking the jersey number full time. Simmons wore No. 94 in high school.

During his media availability, head coach Dan Mullen did indicate the jersey numbers could change and that several freshmen have reached out to him asking why they were given the jersey number the school has assigned them. Mullen also said the number correspond more to where their locker is located and is open to being changed at this point.

Considering Simmons’ is most known for his infamous video taped assault of a woman and has been suspended for the opening game of the season, the choice is an interesting one to say the least.
