In a move that has been expected for some time, Mississippi State quarterback Keytaon Thompson has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

News of Thompson’s decision was first reported by Matt Zenitz of AL.com.

Thompson was a touted, four-star high school prospect out of New Orleans that signed to play for Dan Mullen’s program in the 2017 recruiting cycle after helping Landry-Walker High School win the Louisiana state title during his prep career.

The highlight of Thompson’s Mississippi State career came during his true freshman season when he led the Bulldogs to a win over a Louisville team led by Lamar Jackson in the TaxSlayer Bowl. This came after Nick Fitzgerald suffered a season-ending injury in the Egg Bowl and Dan Mullen departed the Mississippi State program for Florida.

Thompson appeared in 19 games during his freshman and sophomore seasons but did not take a single snap at quarterback last season for Mississippi State, and that was despite the Bulldogs suffering from inconsistent play at quarterback all season. Thompson’s only appearance on the field last season came at the receiver position in the Egg Bowl.

During his college career, Thompson has completed 50 of his 105 attempts for 846 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining and will be a graduate transfer should he decide to leave Mississippi State.

Mississippi State has added Stanford graduate transfer quarterback KJ Costello and Vanderbilt quarterback Allan Walters this offseason and return Garrett Shrader. The Bulldogs also signed in-state QB Will Rogers in the 2020 recruiting cycle.
