Mississippi State is indeed going without Keytaon Thompson at backup quarterback, at least according to the first depth chart release of the season.

The Bulldogs have freshman Garrett Shrader listed behind starting QB Tommy Stevens, who also earned three times as many votes to be one of the team captains as any other teammate, coach Joe Moorhead said.

At wide receiver, Deddrick Thomas notably beat out Isaiah Zuber, who is expected to still receive plenty of playing time. At placekicker, Jordan Lawless, who reportedly has had a strong preseason camp, may have beaten out Jace Christmann, though there’s an “or” between them.

There are just four returning starters on defense, including Leo Lewis over Willie Gay, Jr. at weakside linebacker.

One significant asterisk to note is that Moorhead said the 10 unnamed players expected to be suspended following an academic suspension have not been announced. So this depth chart could look completely different by Saturday when the Bulldogs play Louisiana-Lafayette.
