MSU QB K.J. Costello wins national player of the week award for historic performance
Mississippi State quarterback K.J. Costello has been named the Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Sunday.
Costello’s performance made for a successful debut for Mike Leach and his patented Air Raid offense. During the Bulldogs’ 44-34 win over LSU, the Stanford transfer threw for an SEC record 623 yards, going 36-of-60 while adding 5 touchdowns. He becomes only the 3rd Mississippi State player to win the honor.
“[He] wasn’t perfect…[but] he kept swinging,” Leach told reporters following the game at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. “I thought his composure in this game was outstanding.”
Three different Bulldogs receivers broke the 100-yard receiving mark, including Osirus Mitchell’s game-high 183 yards.
Mississippi State hosts Arkansas in its home opener on Saturday. Kickoff from Davis Wade Stadium is set for 7:30pm ET.
