Last year, Missouri turned things around in a big way by winning its final six games of the regular season, including four conference clashes in November. This year, the Tigers are off to another good start in November, defeating Florida 38-17 in The Swamp.

Mizzou (5-4, 1-4 SEC) coach Barry Odom shared his thoughts on the key to improving in November while also previewing MU’s upcoming home game with Vanderbilt Saturday at noon ET on the SEC Network.

Here’s what Odom had to say on the weekly SEC media teleconference:

Reporter read a story on RB Damarea Crockett which mentioned advice he received from Odom. What advice did Odom give him?

  • He’s had a solid year for us, I had a direct conversation with him, like many others. He, along with others, was hurt after the game. He spoke to the team after the Kentucky game and I liked that. I asked him for more of that and he has stood up and led us.

What did he say in the locker room that impressed you?

  • He was very mature, spoke like a coach. That moment fueled our motivation to play better

On Vanderbilt RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn

  • He’s impressive. He is explosive. He leads the conference in yards per carry. Once he gets to the second level, he is dangerous. His vision is one of his strongest attributes. Overall, he’s a total, complete back. He is dangerous.

Did you evaluate Vaughn at Memphis?

  • Yes. We liked him, but we didn’t have a shot at him.

What is the key to improving in November?

  • The thing is, you can’t get tired of the focus the preparation. There are teams that fall off and there are others to rise. Every day, you have to be consistent. You can’t look too far ahead. I think there are many factors, but those are some that keep us playing our best football late in the season.

On QB Drew Lock and his growth

  • Patience, going through all the reads, living to play another down, not forcing things – those are the things that stand out to me.
