The men’s college basketball season is in full swing. Conference play is under way, meaning now is the time to separate the March Madness pretenders from the contenders.
Last year, the SEC set a record by getting 14 of its 16 schools into the 68-team field. That paid off handsomely, as 7 teams advanced to the Sweet 16, 4 made it to the Elite Eight, 2 to the Final Four, and, of course, the Florida Gators won it all.
That same volume of SEC teams doesn’t seem likely to make the field this year. In ESPN expert Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology, he has 9 SEC squads making the field. Check them out below, led by the Vanderbilt Commodores as a 2-seed:
- Vanderbilt — No. 2 seed (Midwest)
- Florida — No. 4 seed (West)
- Alabama — No. 4 seed (South)
- Tennessee — No. 6 seed (West)
- Arkansas — No. 6 seed (Midwest)
- Georgia — No. 7 seed (East)
- Auburn — No. 8 seed (West)
- Kentucky — No. 10 seed (South)
- Texas A&M — No. 11 seed (South) (Last 4 In)
- LSU — First 4 Out
Obviously, there’s still time for teams like Mizzou and Texas and perhaps others from the SEC to work their way into the tournament field. We’ll see how the rest of the league season plays out moving forward.
