Arch Manning insists ‘I couldn’t lose to (Ohio State) again’ following incredible comeback win

Through 3 quarters in Week 2, the Texas Longhorns appeared destined for hard conversations following what was going to be a disheartening loss vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes. Hollywood Smothers’ 1-yard touchdown plunge with 25 seconds remaining wiped out that reality, though, giving Texas a miracle 24-23 win. In the process, it took immense weight off Arch Manning’s shoulders.

Manning, who played terribly against Ohio State back in 2025, told ESPN’s Laura Rutledge he had “nightmares” about last year’s matchup.

“I couldn’t lose to them again,” Manning said postgame, before shifting his gaze directly to the camera. “I had nightmares… we’re glad to get a win tonight. Have a good night in Austin!”

Manning’s final stat line — 23/37 (62.2%), 195 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT — from the game is incredibly deceiving. His interception came on one of the wildest caroms you’ll ever see, and he had a would-be touchdown dropped in the end zone. He wasn’t exceptional by any means, but he showed up in a much bigger way than he did in 2025. If he hadn’t, the Longhorns wouldn’t have stormed back to steal victory from the jaws of defeat.

Texas hosts UTSA in Week 3. Kickoff between the Longhorns and Road Runners is 8:00 p.m. E.T. on Saturday (SEC Network+).
