In Auburn’s magical 2010 season, which ended in a national championship for the Tigers, DL Nick Fairley set a school record with 11.5 sacks.

This year, talented junior DL Carl Lawson has nine sacks, 2.5 behind Fairley’s record, with three games to play.

According to AL.com, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn is rooting for Lawson to make Auburn history:

“Carl has been one of our top players, one of the best players in college football and he stayed healthy this year and has just been a big-time impact player,” Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said Tuesday morning. “So, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he accomplishes that.”

If Lawson has a big game against Alabama A&M on Saturday, he may be able to tie or break the record.

Watch Lawson’s bid for history at 6:30 p.m. Central time on the SEC Network.
