Oklahoma coach Brent Venables and the Big 12’s official X account traded jabs on Tuesday.
First, during his weekly press conference, Venables was asked a question about what it is like playing in the SEC, and he responded with a dig at the Big 12.
“This isn’t the old Big 12 days where Oklahoma destroys everybody every single week except one game of the year,” Venables said.
While Big 12 fans were not happy with the comment, the Big 12 X account responded with a scathing response to how good the Sooners were during Venables’ time in the Big 12 from 2022-23.
Venables has been the coach at Oklahoma for 4 seasons now, and he spent his first two years in Norman in the Big 12. During those two seasons, Oklahoma was 16-10 in two years, including 10-8 in Big 12 play.
His first season was one of the worst for the Sooners during their time in the Big 12, as they went 3-6. However, OU did win 14 Big 12 Championships during its time in the league (no other program has more than 4 all-time). Venables was a part of several of those titles as he served as Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator from 1999-2011.
Oklahoma will play at South Carolina in Week 8.
