The No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners are taking on their hated rivals, the Texas Longhorns, at the iconic Cotton Bowl this afternoon, and star Sooners quarterback John Mateer will be in action after having surgery on the thumb in his throwing hand just over 2 weeks ago.
Having Mateer back under center is obviously a massive boost for Oklahoma, and ESPN analyst Booger McFarland believes that the Longhorns should be looking to employ some less-than-sportsmanlike behavior if the opportunity arises to throw Mateer off his game.
“That’s a thumb and hand I would be looking to step on as a defensive lineman,” McFarland said before the game regarding the surgically repaired thumb on Mateer’s right hand.
This obviously isn’t something anybody expects to hear from a professional sportscaster on national television, and many fans and spectators have since taken to social media to blast the former LSU and NFL defensive tackle over the unprofessional comments.
Hopefully, the Red River Rivalry doesn’t end up involving any sort of unsportsmanlike behavior, and the game is decided solely on the merit of the teams taking the field.
